I am glad to learn that you have new engineering position, because my existing knowledge and skills can be handy and certainly it brings me opportunities to build my career more solidly.
My job with Freescale provides me a good starting environment to learn practical skills outside school. My main duty is using Karma, an internal characterization tool, to execute tens of thousands simulations and write out liberty files. It gives me a great chance to learn how to design test-cases, how Karma translates them into spice-level records and then use the simulator Mica. The amount of files is too large such that soon scripting language such as Csh and Perl soon became my favorite tools to complete these time-consuming tasks.
Outside my common duty I also take the initiative to learn more. Fortunately I had the chance to explore Common Power Format for power simulation purpose and using TclXML to parse XML files. The former brought me the general understanding for issues related with RTL-stage power simulation in possibly different power domain, along with the opportunity to refresh my Verilog coding ; the latter gave me a good chance to practice TCL and learned how managers treated it as an good methodology to improve interoperability.
Another great learning is from the interaction with colleagues. From them I learned the function and design issues for cells like decoupling cells, level shifters and electrostatic discharge cells. The measurement difference between SOI and bulk process is also interesting. I enjoy learning from others as well as making contribution to my team.
