Even if you have a resume, some companies want to have an application on file as well. This means turning in a full employment package that includes the resume, the application and an application cover letter. An application cover letter is very much like resume cover letter but it is much more important when there is a full package rather than just a resume. This is because of the time that recruiters for the company have to spend on each package that crosses their desk. If you do not have a cover letter, you cannot introduce yourself on paper and the recruiter may not even bother to read your application or resume. Not everyone is going to add an application cover letter so this is one way to make you stand out.
1. What Your Application Cover Letter Needs –
The most important thing that you need on your cover letter is your skills and qualifications. You do not need to include prior work history per se, but you do want to show what you learned from either schooling or prior jobs. This makes the recruiter want to know more about you and in turn, that means a call in for an interview. When you are applying for a job, you need to get your foot into the door and the cover letter is the best way to do this.
2. Use the Internet –
If you are having problems writing your application cover letter, you can use the resources found on the Internet to write one. There are many resources online that show in great detail how to compose and format an application cover letter. There are many different ways to write one and you need only find a format that conveys your own personality. There are also templates that only require you to fill in your own personal information in the sections and the rest is written for you. Of course, many recruiters have seen these templates so they should not be solely relied upon.
3. Get Your Packet to the Right Person –
If you do not send your application packet to the right person, or if you do not put their name on it, you stand a chance at it not being seen. When emailing, make sure that you use the recruiter’s email and not the general email for the company. Emails have a tendency to be lost when they are not addressed properly. The same can be said for snail mail. If you want all of your work to be seen, it needs to get to the proper person.
An application cover letter is just as important as a resume when submitting an application packet. You need to make sure that all documents are included and that all spelling and grammar are correct. If you do not know how to write a cover letter, you can find samples online to work from. Always send the packet to the recruiter and not the general email or snail mail address for company.
